On January 8, 2026, I attended a webinar entitled "Data-Driven Growing in Practice: How AI Helps Shaping Protected Horticulture" organized by the Pusat Studi Sistem Pengelolaan Sumber Daya Lahan, Faculty of Agriculture, Padjadjaran University. The speakers were Mr. Teddy Prayoga from LetsGrow.com and Prof. Reginawanti Hindersah, who served as the moderator.
This webinar enlightened me that data-driven growing, especially in protected horticulture within greenhouses, has already been developing at a rapid pace. We could learn from the implementation in the Netherlands, where Mr Teddy said that because it has a small geographical area compared to Indonesia, and the actors or companies have an openness to share knowledge and data with each other, the development of the greenhouse and data-driven growing has reached an advanced level.
Mr Teddy gave some examples of the tools and data measurement for the plant and greenhouse system, such as an aspirator box, a PAR sensor, and an aquabalance. Mr Teddy gave an example of a greenhouse system in United Arab Emirates (UAE) that could be operated from a distance due to an extreme surrounding environment that most people would not be comfortable to live and stay.
He mentioned that "AI (Artificial Intelligence) in Horticulture is a collection of experiences, knowledge, statistics, and measurements, translated into insight." It means that we could and must use AI as an advancement tool to our horticulture production system, and we combine it with a blending to our rich field experiences and personal knowledge as a grower specialist.
It broadened my perspective as a Junior Agricultural Economist that in Indonesia, we have an opportunity to build an advanced system of greenhouse and data-driven growing as long as we could tackle the knowledge gaps and the lack of supporting ecosystem, innovation, and investment. I want to share to you the materials from Mr Teddy below.
Let's advance the agricultural production system in Indonesia with an adjustment to Indonesia's socio-ecological environment as important as the Indonesian local wisdom and culture!
Kudos!
